JEFF KOONS, catalogue (Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam 1993)

I'd never seen the entrance of the Stedelijk Museum so packed as at the opening of Koons's exhibition. People covered the balcony at the top of the stairs craning to get a glimpse of the artist arriving. Howeevr, they were to be disappointed, as he only strolled in much later, after the opening had almost finished. At the press preview earlier in the day he'd been hamming it up for the cameras, posing next to his sculptures with a continuous smile on his face. During the opening I heard an acquaintance of mine, a woman artist, asking her ex-partner not to let their 11 year old son see Koons's huge pornographic photoworks.
